Fun fair is coming to Burnley

Burnleys mill holidays may be a thing of the past, but one tradition is still going strong - the annual Wakes Fun Fair at Fullege Recreation Ground.

In fact, it is the biggest fun fair of the summer in Lancashire, with more than 30 rides and attractions including a mix of white-knuckle wonders and family-friendly favourites.

“Each year we try to keep things fresh by introducing a few new attractions,” says Billy Hill, part of the fair’s organising committee. “Best of all though, people dont have to drive miles to get there, which with today’s petrol prices I know is an important consideration for a family day out.”

The fair is organised by the Lancashire Section of The Showmens Guild of Great Britain, in conjunction with Burnley Council. Originally held in the town centre, the event can trace its history to a royal charter in 1294. It was moved to the current site, near Towneley Park, in 1956, where it has continued every year except 2008 when severe weather and resurfacing work prevented the event going ahead.

The 2011 fair takes place at the Fullege Recreation Ground from Wednesday until Monday, July 11th. Opening times are Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m, then 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Entry is free.
