Chipping Show preview

Chipping Show has donated £500 to St Mary’s School, Chipping, to help fund the purchase and fitting-out of a new greenhouse which has already been put to good use with some healthy tomato plants growing inside.

The children were also given free admission to this year’s show on Saturday, August 27th. Chipping Show gives free admission to pupils at the three local primary schools; St Mary’s, Brabin’s Endowed School and Bleasdale Primary School to encourage children to go along to see how their entries in the heaviest and best quality potato classes have done. There are lots of other classes for children including handwriting, photography and craft.

This year the horticultural section has a new trophy and prize money donated by Mr Robert Cherry in memory of his parents Len and Sheila Cherry. The trophy will be presented for the best exhibit in the three children’s classes (up to 16 years).

This year’s show promises to be another great day out for all the family, it is one of the best in the area and always has an excellent number and quality of entries in all the livestock classes. Cattle and sheep of many different breeds will be on show as well as Shetland, Shire and a large number of light horses and ponies. There is a large poultry section plus egg and pigeon sections. Some of the most popular attractions are the exhibits in the cakes, handicrafts, flowers and preserves section. The cheese section has grown in stature over the last few years under the guidance of Bob and Faye Kitching from Leagram Organic Dairy. Most of the top national cheese makers will be displaying their finest products.

There will be a dog show with entries taken on the day, a display of vintage farm machinery and a baby show, which this year will be judged by Janet Simpson, proprietor of The Gibbon Bridge Hotel.

There are classes for members of young farmer’s clubs. The main ring highlight this year is the Gwynnedd Axemen demonstrating their lumberjacking skills and also a magic show, children’s sports, junior shepherd and stockman competitions, a fell race and lots of trade stands, catering outlets, a licensed bar, luncheon tent and much more.
