The annual “Light up a Life” campaign is run by the hospice in the run up to Christmas and culminates when lights outside the hospice are switched on. This year nearly 8,000 people were remembered in that way.

An estimated 1,000 people gathered in the December cold for a dedication service to see the lights and those on a Christmas tree provided each year by Alderson and Horan Funeral Services. The names of everyone remembered is entered into a book of remembrance which is kept on display at the hospice. The leather bound book is provided by the Co-operative Funeral Care and should be ready for viewing by the end of March.

Organiser Mrs Kaye Bartle said the event was one of the hospice’s biggest fund-raisers: “Light up a Life is important to a lot of people in our community, not just for the fantastic amount of money that it raises for patient care but because it gives us chance to remember loved ones no longer with us at Christmas.”
