St John Ambulance offers first-aid advice to businesses

Leading first aid organisation St John Ambulance is urging businesses and other organisations in Lancashire to take advantage of a special offer to ensure their staff and volunteers can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.

The training arm of the charity is offering a third off its emergency first aid at work course for bookings taken up to October 21st. Launched in 2010, EFAW has been developed in line with the Health & Safety Executive’s changes to the first aid at work regulations and is designed for lower-risk businesses. The course is run over one day and covers a range of practical first aid skills.

In 2009/10 there were 152 deaths in the workplace and over 28 million working days lost due to work-related illness or injuries. Over 1,000 businesses were taken to court because of health and safety failings resulting in 80% being convicted. Research by St John Ambulance found that, worryingly, over 15% of businesses have never carried out an assessment to determine risks within the workplace and therefore how to protect staff.

Alex Swift, Regional Director for St John Ambulance in the North West, said: “Health and safety issues can be daunting for smaller businesses, especially when faced with the prospect of dealing with risk assessment, protocols and legal obligations. The consequences of not dealing with the issues though can be immense, not only in terms of the health of employees, but also financially. We realise time and resources are precious to every business and the EFAW is ideal for smaller, lower-risk businesses. We have on-line resources where businesses can find out quickly and easily what they need to do to fulfil their legal obligations, what training gaps they might have and how best to make their workplace safe. We are offering this special deal and hope that as many businesses, groups, and other organisations will take advantage of it.’

St John Ambulance has four training venues across the county and can deliver courses in the workplace and a range of courses in first aid and health and safety. Call on 0844 324 5535 quoting NW23.
