The new machines provide more advanced, high-quality images, and due to the enhanced technology significantly reduce the time a patient spends in the scanner.

This means staff are now able to perform more scans, helping cut down patient waiting times.

The scanners, which are housed in a purpose-built modular building next to the new £10m Fairhurst building, are also "whisper quiet" giving the patient improved comfort and a much better experience overall.

There is a dedicated entrance for outpatients so they do not need to enter the main hospital building and a connecting corridor from the main building provides easy access for inpatients.

Carol Wood, Radiology Operations Manager for East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust said: “As part of our work to restore services suspended due to Covid-19, the installation of the new scanners are instrumental in ensuring we can continue to deliver Safe, Personal and Effective care to all of our patients.

"Their arrival has already significantly increased our patients experience and subsequently lifted staff morale. Looking to the future we hope having the most up to date equipment will help us attract new additional staff to the Trust.”
