The school had already donated its own personal protective equipment to Burnley General Hospital and Oakmount House Residential Care Home.

However, staff and pupils wanted to do more to help those on the frontline.

The JustGiving page - which can be found here - was created to support the production of PPE for the NHS, healthcare providers and residential care homes.

It enables the school to buy raw materials from which pupils – the children of key workers currently in school – can create much needed equipment such as visors.

Money is also being used to buy specific PPE, provide care packages for key workers, and support food banks.

The school's original fundraising target of £500 was surpassed almost immediately, with £1,300 worth of donations made in less than 24 hours. The JustGiving page will now remain open for the remainder of the crisis.

Samantha Barker, business clinical manager at Northern Case Management, said, “A huge thank you to Shuttleworth College staff and students for making and providing 50 face shields for our vulnerable clients with Acquired Brain Injuries.

"These will go a long way to ensuring that we continue to provide safe 24/7 care to clients in their own home, keeping clients and their support workers safe, well and avoiding hospital admissions.

"The thank you cards from the students will be passed to the support workers the shields are issued to and they will definitely lift spirits in these difficult times.”

Shuttleworth headteacher Ruth England said: “It doesn’t surprise me that our staff and students wanted to do even more to support frontline workers at this very difficult time.

"I am so proud that they have managed to organise such a large response so quickly. We will continue to work with healthcare and support services to ensure that we produce what is most needed and that it is delivered safely.”
