A spokesman for the county council confirmed the news today, the latest in a line of measures designed to counter the coronavirus outbreak.

The spokesman said: "The waste and recycling centres are now closed until further notice, as they are classed non-essential. People can still use their household waste collections."

Only yesterday, the Burnley Express reported that the centres were open but the public were urged to use them responsibly or face closure of the sites.

The county's household waste recycling centres were extremely busy over the weekend, coinciding with a spell of fine weather, with some sites having to temporarily close at times while skips were changed.

Anyone visiting the recycling centres had been advised that site staff have been instructed not to help people carry items to the skips in order to observe social distancing.
