Emergency services thank farmer for 'invaluable' help to rescue lost walker on Pendle Hill

Emergency service teams, who had to mount a rescue operation after a female walker got lost on Pendle Hill, have thanked a member of the public who went 'above and beyond' to assist their operation.

Teams were called on after a walker got into difficulty on Pendle Hill on Wednesday evening.

Several forces were called out to help including police, mountain rescue, ambulance and a helicopter from the Police National Air Service.

A spokesman for Ribble Valey Police said that without the invaluable help of a local farmer in locating the walker he' very much doubts' they would have found her saying: "The area is beautiful, but wild without reference points, especially in the dark.

"A local farmer, Mr Gill, who has exceptional local knowledge, assisted with gaining access and then gave up around three hours of his valuable time transporting members of the emergency services around the hill before he and a local police officer located the lost walker.

"He should be very proud of himself. On behalf of everyone at Ribble Valley Police, Mr Gill, thankyou."

Police and countryside officials have appealed for people to keep away from Pendle Hill and other popular beauty spots after hordes of folk headed out this week. This was despite the fact Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned them to stay indoors to try and stop the spread of the coronavirus.

A sign announcing that Pendle Hill is closed has even been placed at the foot the iconic landmark.
