Emmaus Burnley is a charity that provides a home, work and individual support to people who have experienced homelessness and social exclusion. The temporary closure of Emmaus Burnley’s charity stores due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation poses a significant risk to the charity.

Jimmy Innes, one of the beneficiaries of Emmaus Burnley, said: “I travelled the world supporting many famous bands as a technical production manager, but unfortunately I ended up homeless. I hadn’t really worked for about two or three years, so I was out of the routine of working. Emmaus gave me some structure and also built my confidence again.

“Emmaus can only survive with your input, donations, custom and support. The more people who know about Emmaus, the more understanding and knowledge people will have about homelessness.”

Emmaus Burnley supports up to 24 formerly homeless people by providing them with a stable home and meaningful work for as long as they need it. The charity operates two stores in Burnley and Rochdale with all the money raised used to help people out of homelessness.

"The majority of the funds Emmaus Burnley needs to survive are generated through their charity stores.

Stephen Buchanan, Director at Emmaus Burnley, said: “Like everyone else, the people we support are staying at home and we’re trying to keep everyone safe. Our charity stores are closed but the support we offer to formerly homeless people continues. It is vital we do all we can to ensure everyone’s wellbeing and keep a roof over their head.”
