However, she didn't let the coronavirus outbreak ruin her 100th birthday and made sure she celebrated the special day - obviously adhering to the social distancing rules.

Staff from Beech Grove Care Home, Low Moor, rallied as the celebratory day was marked for Eileen, who is a former headmistress of Bolton-By-Bowland Primary School.

A spokesman for Beech Grove said: "Due to the current lockdown on our country, Eileen's family visited Beech Grove via the garden and were able to see the birthday girl through the conservatory windows. With the windows thrown open, family were able to wish Eileen a happy birthday and see the cards and gifts that Eileen had received."

She added: "Eileen's great-grandchildren, grandchildren and children visited in their separate household groups keeping good social distancing while in the garden. Prosecco and cake flowed around the celebration. Eileen said she was amazed and humbled by the number of cards and wellwishes she received and is now looking forward to when the lockdown is lifted so she can celebrated her birthday in style with all her friends and family by having a big do."
