Blackburn over London for Mehreen
A former Clitheroe Royal Grammar School pupil swapped her place at the London School of Economics to study at Blackburn College '“ and was delighted to achieve a First Class Honours degree.
Mehreen Quraishi (21) was thrilled to graduate with a First Class BA (Hons) degree in History and Politics.
After studying for her A-Levels at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, in History, Politics, Classics, German and General Studies, Mehreen achieved 2 A*s and 3 As and was all set to study at London School of Economics (LSE).
But right at the last minute, she decided to go to University Centre at Blackburn College.
Mehreen said: “I had to phone up LSE and let them know I wouldn’t be going,”
Mehreen, of Wensley Fold, Blackburn, said her brother also studied BA (Hons) History and Politics at University Centre at Blackburn College and had a great time.
She continued: “He got a First Class Honours too, and had told me about how great the course was. That personal recommendation meant a lot to me.
“The BA (Hons) History and Politics degree is validated by Lancaster University, which really swayed my decision as it meant I could live at home, save on the costs of expensive London accommodation, but still get a UK top 10 degree.
“My parents left the decision to me but were glad I chose to stay close to home. Other friends tell me that their lecturers at other universities don’t know their names – at Blackburn it wasn’t like that. The seminar groups are ideal for discussions which especially is great for Politics as it allows you to thrash out ideas in sensible sized groups.
“I’ve got a First Class Honours degree and am intending having a year out now, but I’m looking to progress on to a Masters degree in Modern History.”
Mehreen was one of more than 600 students who graduated from the University Centre at Blackburn College last Thursday.
Speaking on the day, Principal and Chief Executive Dr Thomas Moore said: “This is a very special day for not only the students, but also their partners, family and friends.
“I would like to pass on my congratulations to all our students who graduated, and also praise the staff for their dedication, commitment and professionalism in helping our students realise their full potential.”
