The council has received 1,323 applications so far and paid out 790 grants totaling £9.355 million – 62% of applications received.

Burnley Council chief executive Mick Cartledge said they were working hard to get the remainder of these payments out by the end of the week.

However, 886 businesses were still to come forward.

Mr Cartledge said: "The council has deployed additional staff and had staff working over the weekend to verify applications in line with Government requirements and process payments.

“Where we have already received an application with the correct supporting details, we aim to get these remaining payments out by the end of this week.

"However to date only 60% of eligible businesses have contacted the council and completed an application form.

"We urge the other 886 businesses to come forward as soon as possible and complete the form on the council's website."

These payments include one-off grants totaling £10,000 to businesses occupying premises with a rateable value of up to £15,000.

Businesses in retail, hospitality and leisure with a rateable value of between £15,000 and £51,000 are eligible to receive a grant of £25,000.
