The Talbot in Church Street could be redeveloped into 10 apartments after a plan was submitted to Burnley Borough Council.

If the pub were to close, the news will come as a blow to many generations of Burnley folk who have frequented the pub over the years, which was well known for hosting local bands, giving a platform to many to showcase their talents.

It was also a popular venue for darts and pool teams, as well as a matchday watering hole for Clarets fans.

The business is currently closed due to Covid-19 operating restrictions on the leisure industry over the past 12 months, something which the owners say is influencing any future decisions.

However, the owners say that they are keeping all options open and that the pub could still reopen if someone expressed an interest.

One of the owners said in a statement: "As you are all aware, the Talbot was closed down by government mandate over a year ago because of the pandemic.

"Recent online activity, and comments on social media, lead us to feel that now is the time to clarify facts regarding the potential future of the pub and the planning application submitted to Burnley Council.

"The planning application is just that - an application. There's no guarantee that planning permission will be granted. As of today, and until June 21st this year, we have no idea whether it will be possible to reopen The Talbot as a pub in the way that will make it a going concern.

"We are simply exploring the options available to us and are unable to give any further information at this time."

Occupying four stories the impressive landmark building on the corner of Church Street and Ormerod Road is one of Burnley's oldest and is an important part of the town's heritage.
