Planning officials say in a report to go before members of Burnley Council’s Development Control Committee on Thursday: “The proposed site on the north side of Wyre Street is assembled from the existing Enterprise Works (last occupied as Sensible Price van hire), a small building accessed from Clitheroe Street (tripe factory) and Unit 1(currently occupied by Padiham Carpet Mill).

“The proposal is for the demolition of these buildings and the re-development of the site which bounds the edge of Padiham Town Centre on its western side where it is close to town centre car parks, retail shops and commercial uses.

“A Tesco supermarket, opened in 2012 is located to the south side of the site.

“The proposed opening hours are 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays. There would be 40 full-time employees.

“8,301 leaflets were distributed to surrounding addresses and there were 398 respondents of which 98 per cent supported the proposal.

“The proposal would not cause harm to the setting of the Padiham Conservation Area. The proposal would be a suitable re-development of a site that borders Padiham Town Centre and provide benefits from increasing the range of shopping for local people. It is accepted that the site is suitable and would not lead to a significant impact on the viability or vitality of Padiham town centre.”

Gawthorpe ward’s Coun. Andrew Tatchell said: “I think having a Lidl supermarket would be good. Any development locally to provide jobs has to be welcomed.”
