Pendle children saddled up for 'Big Bike Swap'

The event was organised by Go Velo – a team of qualified cycling instructors, coaches, ride leaders and mechanics. The aim was to support parents in obtaining replacement bicycles which are a correct fit for their child, whilst also reducing waste.

Members of the public donated their old children’s bicycles during the morning session, which were checked over by Go Velo’s bike mechanics and then donated in the afternoon. Instructors were on hand to give advice and tuition to the new owners.

Kirsty Williamson donated her daughters’ old bike and said: “My daughter had long grown out of it and I’m genuinely happy that someone else can enjoy it, it’s a cool bike! Thanks for arranging the swap, we need more events like this to help others and reduce waste!”

Go Velo has successfully delivered Bikeability and Adult Cycle Training to more than 40,000 people in Lancashire since its formation in 2009.

Kirsti Grayson, managing director, said: “Lots of people have loved the idea and I know it will be popular in the future. We are always getting offered children’s bikes but have not got storage or a need for more than we have. We also see lots of riders on bikes which are too small for them, so this was a solution to help everyone keep their children riding suitable bikes.”

All unclaimed bikes were donated to local primary schools for children that do not have access to one at home.
