Theatre Review: “Love Story” at the Octagon Theatre, Bolton

“Where do I begin? To tell the story of how great a love can be; The sweet love story that is older than the sea; The simple truth about the love he brings to me; Where do I start?”

If you have seen the movie, you will know the song.

So where do I begin? I could begin with the writing of Stephen Clark who has revisited the original story, refined it, replenished it and re-invigorated it so that it stands the test of time.

I could begin with the music of Howard Goodall – at times haunting and at times vibrant but always enjoyable and conveyed superbly by both vocalists and musicians.

I could begin with the acting and the faultless performances in particular of Daniel Boys (Oliver Barrett III) and Lauren Samuels (Jenny Cavilleri).

I could begin with the story. It is sweet, funny and tragic – a powerful combination that makes it endearing as well as enduring.

I could begin with the directorial accomplishment of Elizabeth Newman who has brought it all to fruition in such an imaginative way that demonstrates theatre at its best.

I could begin with any of the aforementioned but it doesn’t really matter where I begin because, from beginning to end, this is a wonderful wonderful production.

Treat yourself – and treat yourself to a supply of tissues while you are at it!

It runs until 12th July and tickets are available on 01204-520661.
