Theatre review: Alice in Wonderland at the Octagon Theatre, Bolton

The Octagon flexes its theatrical muscle with this festive foray into fantasy.

Ambitious it may be but on the evidence of what I witnessed, I wouldn’t say the theatre is punching above its weight. This modern interpretation of the Lewis Carroll classic is proof, if any were needed, that this theatre is equal to any challenge it may take on.

It’s a weird and wonderful journey that may have the adults perplexed but will have the children fascinated, and there is a moral to the story to round it off nicely. Some may feel short-changed by the economy of costume but any economy only serves to emphasise the creativity that is imbued in the costumes by both maker and performer. Ingenuity abounds throughout the production and the Octagon is to be applauded for meeting the challenges head on.

The cast of seven excels in its versatility and takes time out to interact with the audience and enhance the amiable atmosphere. It all makes for another Christmas cracker from the Octagon!
