‘Educating Rita’ comes to Colne

Willy Russell’s fabulous comedy “Educating Rita”is being presented by Colne Dramatic Society next month.

The play follows the relationship between Rita, a young hairdresser from Liverpool, and middle-aged university lecturer Dr Frank Bryant, and takes place during the course of a year.

Rita, dissatisfied with the routine of her work and social life, seeks inner growth by signing up for an Open University course in English literature. Frank is impressed by Rita’s verve and earnestness and is forced to re-examine his attitudes and position in life.

Rita finds Frank’s tutelage opens doors to a new found self-confidence.

The play deals with the concept of freedom, change, England’s class system, the shortcomings of institutional education, and the nature of self-development and personal relationships.

Featuring performances from Lisa Smith and Alan Hargreaves, it is directed by Marilyn Crowther.
