Aiden Wellock has shared this stunning photo he captured of these rare Noctilucent cloud formations over Barnoldswick.

Also known as Polar Mesosperic they are a rare twilight treat.

NCL’s are only visible if your lucky during summer months between May-August, only then at higher latitudes between 45-60 degrees North.

They are formed by ice crystals way up in the mesosphere 50 miles above the earths surface. Timing of their formation, sunset and the atmospheric conditions have to be just right in order for us to see them.

This is the first time that Aiden had seen them since July 16th last year.
