The sci-fi blockbuster has now taken £108.4 million at cinemas across the country, according to figures from the British Film Institute (BFI).

Only Titanic has made more money in the UK: £111.3 million in today’s prices.

The Force Awakens is likely to pass this figure next week, however.

It has already overtaken previous record-breakers Skyfall (£107.8 million), Avatar (£105.6 million) and Spectre (£94.6 million).

All these figures have been adjusted for inflation.

Spectre is still showing in some UK cinemas, but ticket sales have slowed in recent weeks, suggesting it may struggle to top £100 million before it is released on DVD on February 9.

There are currently three Star Wars entries in the list of the UK’s top 20 biggest films: The Force Awakens (second place), The Phantom Menace (11th) and the original Star Wars (16th).

The BFI holds UK box office information dating from 1975.

Comparable figures are not available from before this date.

Gone With The Wind is estimated by the BFI to hold the record for the greatest number of UK cinema admissions, totalling around 35 million since 1940.
