Burnley star Alice lands Fairy Godmother role

BURNLEY has its own Fairy Godmother – in the shape of Alice Barry.

Although she has moved from Burnley to Blackpool, Alice, who is best known for her role as Lillian in “Shameless”, is still well-loved in the town.

And she is about to make wishes come true...

For fun-loving Alice has landed the role of the Fairy Godmother in the adults-only panto “Sinderfella”, which opens in Manchester on December 15th.

A total sell-out at London’s Leicester Square Theatre in 2009, this wicked adult twist on the classic pantomime mixes bawdy cross-dressing and feel good party anthems to kickstart Christmas.

In “Sinderfella” the actress scheduled to play Cinderella for the night hasn’t turned up so the Fairy Godmother has to conjure up a plan. Loitering around the auditorium is Miss Thunderpussy, who has always dreamed of playing Cinderella and is desperate for the chance to step in. Hilarity ensues as Sinderfella works her magic, ensnaring both her Prince Charming and Buttons (radio presenter Nicksy) neither of whom realise that she is a drag queen!

This is the latest in a long list of comedy roles for Alice, who started out as an extra in “Coronation Street”. But her success came in leaps and bounds and she has appeared in Peter Kay’s “Phoenix Nights”, “New Street Law”, “Bob and Rose” and “Clocking Off”. But her biggest role to date has been Lillian in “Shameless”, which was created by Burnley-born writer Paul Abbot. Alice is currently filming a ninth series of the critically-acclaimed show.

“Sinderfella”, which is suitable for over 18s only, will play at The Dance House in Oxford Road, Manchester.
