Author Cherry Briggs was a biology teacher living in Oxfordshire when one day she decided she wanted to head for warmer climes.
So she jumped on her bike and cycled around Asia until she reached Sri Lanka. These days she lives in Colombia, but her book follows in the footsteps of eccentric Victorian explorer James Emerson Tennent, along a routein Sri Lanka which takes her to pilgrimage trails, into tea estatesand rural regions inhabited by indigenous tribes.
Briggs also travelled through restricted areas of the former warzone and delved under the surface of the contemporary culture via cricket matches and fortune tellers. A fascinating book.
