Seventy songs for 70 years for singer Alan

A retired teacher plans to sing 70 songs to mark his 70th birthday on Saturday (October 8th)

And along with entertaining the crowds, Alan Scholes hopes to raise cash towards an extension for the church in Cliviger where he worships.

The marathon challenge begins at noon and Alan hopes to have completed it by 5pm. He plans to start with songs he learned from his grandfather and his set list includes many of his favourites growing up, through his school and college life and later when he worked as a teacher at the former Barden High School in Burnley for 32 years.

Alan has also been involved in gospel and folk music groups over the years ad his repertoire will include a selection from these days.

Her will be playing the guitar and will be joined at various times throughout the day by other singers to help ease the burden on his voice.

The marathon sing-a-long is taking place at Mount Zion Church and visitors are invited to drop in at anytime, have a listen to Alan and also make a donation to the extension fund.

Alan said: "I came up with the idea as something a little bit different to help raise some money for the extension fund.

"I hope people will come along for a listen and there will be refreshments available too."
