A QUARTET of young ambassadors are going to be flying the flag for sport in the town.

Abigail Pounder, from Thomas Whitham Sixth Form, Elliot Stackhouse, from Burnley College, Jodie Sutcliffe, from Shuttleworth and William Smith from Sir John Thursby have all being appointed young sporting gold ambassadors by Burnley School Sport Partnership.

They were appointed after a series of interviews and will now help deliver the School Games Programme – a national initiative, designed to get more young people taking part in competitive school sport.

In addition to this a huge part the ambassador role is to find innovative ways of promoting the Olympic and Paralympic values of friendship, excellence, respect, courage, determination, and equality.

With London 2012 just months away and the torch relay coming to the streets of Burnley this is a really exciting time for the ambassadors to be involved in the programme and they are already busy planning a series of torch relay related activities for local primary schools.

They also recently attended a national Young Ambassador Conference at Lancashire County Cricket Ground where Olympic sporting heroes past and present were on hand to mentor and train young sports ambassadors from across the country so they are fully prepared to carry out their roles.
