SOPHIE Hitchon added another seven centimetres to her UK hammer record in California on Saturday.
Competing in the 54th Mt Sac Relays competition in Walnut, the 20-year-old threw a huge 70.47m to finish third behind Amber Campbell (71.57m) and Jessica Cosby (71.29m).
The former Ivy Bank pupil had a very consistent meet, throwing 68.33m, 69.48m, 68.70m, 69.50m, 70.47m and 69.88m.
It is the second time she has passed the 70m mark, having last month become the first British woman to do so with a throw of 70.40m in the first event held at UK Athletics’ new indoor throws centre at Loughborough.
She is currently in America for warm weather training, based in Chula Vista, San Diego, at the USA Olympic training centre.
Last year, Sophie twice set UK records, throwing 69.43m, before adding 16cm to win the bronze medal at the European Under 23 Championships.
The Olympic A standard is 71.50m, but Hitchon is now consistently passing the B standard of 69m, which she had to achieve twice from April 1st, when the qualification period began, ending on and ends on July 8th.
For Hitchon to guarantee a place with Team GB for the Games, she needs to hit the A standard twice, but, as she is the UK record holder and has met the B standard, she is in pole position for a place in the squad.
