Sophie earns top 10 finish

SOPHIE Hitchon was a top 10 finisher in her first international appearance of the year in Spain.

The 21-year-old hammer thrower was one of seven Team GB athletes in action in Castellon for the 13th edition of the European Cup Winter Throwing.

And the former Ivy Bank pupil, who reached the final at London 2012 with another new British record of 71.98m, finished 10th with a best throw of 66.69m.

Hitchon produced the distance with her final throw in Castellon, with Moldovan Zalina Marghieva winning with a throw of 71.98m with her first attempt.

Of Sophie’s teammates, Rachel Wallader placed 12th in the shot putt with an effort of 15.20m, in an event won by Olympic and European indoor silver medallist Yevgeniya Kolodko, who recorded 19.04m.

Mark Dry won the men’s B hammer with his best throw of the season so far - 73.22m - with Alex Smith third with 68.34m.

Sarah Holt also finished third in the B competition of the women’s hammer after a best throw of 65.82m.

Sophie McKinna was second in the Under 23 shot putt with a best throw of 16.09m, 69cm behind winner Emel Dereli of Turkey.

Joe Dunderdale was sixth in the Under 23 javelin with a season’s best throw of 73.02m.
