RV GOLF - President's Day prize for golfer Simon
By EDWARD LEE SIMON HALE won the gold medal on President's Day at Clitheroe GC on Saturday.
He claimed the top prize when he carded 76-6-70 - but it took a multiple card play-off for him to be crowned winner.
Colin S. Akeroyd (84-14-70) took the silver medal, and also won Division Two on a card play-off with Richard Wood (88-18-70). John A. Hammond (89-17-72) was third and Som J. Gude (87-15-72) was fourth.
Division One honours went to Alec J. Howat (82-12-70) on the card from Clive Wood (78-8-70). Paul Shackleton (83-12-71) took third place ahead of Harry Richardson (79-8-71).
Brian Minto (99-28-71) topped Division Three ahead of I.S. Lambert (97-22-75), and Mark Ashworth returned 72 to take the gross prize.
On Sunday, D. Eglin and S. Cornwell (83-12.5-70.5) won the Open Mixed Greensomes by the narrowest of margins.
G. Stoddart and P. Murray (91-20-71) were second after a card play-off with H. Hemmingway and M. Gooch (90-19-71). J. and S. Willis (89-17.5-71.5) took fourth place, and D. and R. Stott (91-19-72) were fifth.
Rob and Kim Andrew (79) won the gross prize after a card play-off with W.E. Speak and C. Kirk, and D. Irwin and C. Stokes.
Peter Tomlinson was the clear winner of the August Medal at Mytton Fold GC when he carded 83-16-67.
Paul Barrett (82-9-73) and James Kennerley (80-7-73) topped Division One; the Division Two prizes went to Mark Green (87-18-69) and David Bolton (84-14-70) and the Division Three honours were claimed by Frank Tunstall (94-24-70) and John Berry (95-24-71).
With three singles events to go this season, Roger Altham (53 points) is the clear leader in the chase for the Order of Merit. Craig Taylor (39) is in second place with Stewart Seed (32) in third place.
And on Sunday club captain Jim Hindle combined with Nelson's Harvey Thompson to win the second Invitation Day with 46 stableford points.
Sam Punchard and Mark Hitchen (Clitheroe) were second with 44 points, Les McCormick and Brian Furnell (Wilpshire) were two points further back in third place, and the final prize went to Chris Hughes and John Brandon (Darwen, 41).
John Twissell's professional's prize for lady members at Clitheroe saw Tracey Bentley and Barbara Thornton return a 69 nett to win on a card play-off from Pat and Krystyna Taylor.
Fran Gierat won the RNLI competition held at Whalley Golf Club.
Her score of 34 points was four better than Daphne Dawson who beat Betty Dixon to runners-up position on the card.
In their first season in the competition, the Mytton Fold junior team face an uphill struggle to win the East Lancashire Golf Association Knockout.
They played the first leg of the final on Saturday at Accrington and lost 6-1 - being especially unlucky to lose all three matches that went to sudden death. The second leg will be played at Mytton Fold on Saturday week.
