Late try not quite enough for Burnley
IN a great match at Holden Road last Saturday, Burnley went down 31-27 to Tarleton.
Burnley began in determined mood, taking the lead from a Dom Leck penalty after good pressure.
A sloppy clearance kick and non-existent chase allowed the visitors to run the ball back and score under the posts, which was duly converted.
Burnley responded well with returning skipper Nino Angelone, Joe Till and Hugo Lever all making telling runs.
From a great scrum, Richard Murray picked up and fed Billy Ingham, who crashed over, and Leck added the conversion. The lead was shortlived, as in a 10-minute period before the half, Burnley hit the self destruct button as poor kicking, allied to some weak tackling, allowed the visitors’ talented half backs and inside centre room to conjure up two tries, one of which was converted.
Burnley regained their composure and played some good rugby. The returning Ben Healey added physicality to Burnley’s running, and after a good Simon Finnan run was just stopped, Murray got a try to get the home side back into the game at 19-15 down.
Tarleton scored a well-worked try early in the second half as they sucked in Burnley’s defenders, but this galvanised Burnley into wave after wave of attack.
Tarleton lost a man to the sin bin as the pressure told, and the extra man allowed the now-dominant Burnley scrum to give Murray enough room to scramble over.
Burnley then had their best spell, and with 10 minutes to go, a great Finnan break was stopped short of the line and Tarleton cleared the danger.
From turnover ball, the visitors moved the ball wide and scored under the posts.
Burnley then threw caution to the wind. Tom Cooley was just held up after great work by Finnan and Ingham and from the next play Ingham went over and Leck added the extras.
Tomorrow Burnley travel to Liverpool to play St Edward’s.
The seconds opened their campaign with a 60-14 win at Vale of Lune.
Tries came from Andrew Chapman, Lloyd Whittaker, braces from man of match Wes Hughes and Jack Wilkinson and a hat-trick from Lee Dane. Skipper Gus Ferguson added six conversions and a penalty.
Tomorrow the seconds are at home to Bolton.
The Under 17s went down 43-0 at Southport.
Tomorrow, the thirds are at Chorley, and on Sunday the Under 17s play Littleborough at 12-30 p.m., the Under 19s travel to Glossop (2 p.m. kick-off) and there is junior training for all other ages between 10 a.m. and noon.
