Burnley RUFC hand Hutton first defeat

BURNLEY travelled to Police HQ Preston to face undefeated Hutton last Saturday.

Burnley dominated the opening exchanges with subtle running by centre pairing Ryan Bradley and Chris Baxendale, allied to sustained pressure from the front row of skipper Nino Angelone, Adam Healy and Luca Angelone, with support and strong rucking from the backk row of Adam Lee, Ben Healy and Richard Murray.

Skipper Angelone powered over for a try, and scrum half Matt Crowley ensured quick clean ball to keep Burnley on the front foot, and Hugo Lever added a penalty after further pressure.

Hutton hit back after good work by their forwards and added a penalty to level the scores.

Just before the half Adam Healy scored his first senior try and Lever added a tremendously difficult conversion.

After conceding a number of penalties, Burnley found themselves on the backfoot and Hutton’s captain went over.

The match was set for a tense finale, and Hutton battered the Burnley line, but they held out for a fine 15-13 victory to keep them in the promotion mix.

The seconds got back to winning ways with a thoroughly entertaining 25-12 victory over Preston Grasshoppers.

After early pressure they were awarded a penalty try, and skipper Ferguson added the kick. A further penalty then a great Wes Hall run extended the locals’ lead. Ferguson again added the kick. In the second half another Ferguson penalty, followed by a long distance Mark Jackson try completed Burnley’s scoring. Hoppers hit back with two late tries, one of which they converted. Men of the match were centre pairing Tom Cooley and Rob O’Brien.

The thirds went down 15-13 at Carnforth. The home side used their experience well to frustrate Burnley and lead 8-0 at the half. Burnley improved after the break, Joe Hayley gaining Burnley’s first score. Closely followed by a penalty. Carnforth hit back with a converted try and Burnley responded through a Joe Astin try after a great scrum but they just ran out of time.

The Under 19s went down to a useful Bury side 24-10. After a slow start the locals hauled themselves back into the match with tries from Ashley Hancock and Anthony Clarke but had left themselves too much work to do.

Tomorrow Burnley firsts and thirds are home to Garstang , the seconds travel to Wharton, all 3 p.m. kick-offs.

Today the Tags/Under 7s/8s/12s are at Bolton, the Under 16s are at Colne,l with the Under 19s training at 2 p.m.
