Padiham gave their hopes of finishing outside the bottom two in the Ribblesdale League Senior Division a huge shot in the arm on Saturday.

Callum Clarke’s men were staring down the barrel at 18-5 against Whalley at the Arbories, but they recovered to post a total of 150 all out.

But professional Chris Holt stood up to be counted as the Ribble Valley side mounted their reply, taking 7-56 to bowl Whalley out for 143, seven runs short.

It leaves Padiham still bottom of the table, but they are now two points behind Euxton, with a gap of 12 to Cherry Tree.

In the league’s game of the day, meanwhile, third place Read lost the opportunity to climb above reigning cvhampions Barnoldswick into second place.

Read made 210-7 in their innings, as Elliott Artingstoll top-scored with 63.

But Barlick professional Imran Khalid responded with 69 as they passed the target with four wickets in hand.

On Saturday, Padiham continue their bid to climb away from danger when they visit The Cliffe to face Great Harwood, while Read entertain Earby, wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m.
