Padiham’s promotion hopes took a knock as they lost out to Cherry Tree by two wickets at the Arbories on Saturday.

Callum Clarke’s men posted 218-8, as Brannon Varley hit 76, and opener Phil Haggerty made 40.

But Cherry Tree knocked off the runs for the loss of eight wickets with 17 balls to spare, despite three wickets for Curtis Meehan.

Skipper Callum Clarke felt his side snatched defeat from the jaws of victory: “I still can’t believe we lost!

“It was one of those days, we batted really well and set a decent total, and had them at 100-5.

“But we took our foot off the gas.

“They had a good partnership which took them to 170, and they needed 60 or so off the last six, which they managed to get.”

Padiham sit second in Section B of the Houldsworth Solicitors Ribblesdale Cricket League behind Euxton, but remain on track for promotion to the top flight, seven points clear of Salesbury in third.

Padiham are at defending champions Clitheroe on Saturday.

Read had an open date on Saturday, but return to action this Saturday with a Ribble Valley derby at Salesbury.

Read are third in Section A, 29 points behind leaders Settle wit a game in hand.
