Hameldon gets into the Olympic spirit

PUPILS at Hameldon Community College have been getting into the Olympic spirit by taking part in their own Olympic Torch relay.

The traditional sports day at Hameldon was renamed Olympic Day in 2008 and ahead of the event this year, PE teacher Mr Steven Holden proposed the idea of having the Hameldon Olympic torch.

Mr Holden said: “The pupils have really taken to the torch. They have enjoyed having the honour of carrying it through the college and it has been a big deal, especially with it coinciding with the real Olympic torch coming to East Lancashire.”

The Hameldon Olympic torch was designed and made by PE teacher Mrs Sharon Mercer and her family.

The torch began its journey when it was handed over by the PE department to headteacher Gill Broom. Each department in school then kept the torch for one day and displayed it within their classrooms and offices.
