DISAPPOINTED: Sophie Hitchon

BURNLEY athlete Sophie Hitchon warmed up for the Olympics with an 11th place finish at the European Championship hammer finals in Finland.

The 20 year old’s best throw of 67.17 metres in Helsinki was only 75cm short of a place in the top eight, which would have earned an extra three throws, but it was considerably short of her best.

Hitchon, who won the women’s hammer at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium recently to claim the UK title for the second-successive year, has been consistently throwing in the region of 70m all year and, after breaking the British record three times, hit the A standard with an effort of 71.61m in California in April.

She will now attend a training camp in Portugal before competing in the greatest show on earth - the Olympics, with qualifying on Wednesday, August 8th, and the final two days later.
