Of 14 carded fighters, Burnley amateur boxing coach Brian Roche now boasts four national and four regional champions at his Briercliffe Road gym.
That record was polished by Roche’s proteges as Dean Thompson and Morgan Jackson had their arms held aloft in their respective North West Regional finals at Gorton in Manchester.
Colne fighter Thompson, 15, beat Macclesfield’s Peter Farghaly over three rounds in the 50kg class to book his place in the Northern Area finals in Gorton on Sunday.
“He’s developing well,” said Roche. “That was his 19th fight and he’s really improving. He’s won his last four fights now which shows the important is where you finish, not where you start.” Meanwhile, 17-year-old Jackson also booked his place in Sunday’s finals in the 75kg class.
Roche Amateur Boxing Club will be showcasing some of its burgeoning boxing talents at a show on May 24th at Byerden House. Tickets for the event are £10 and can be purchased from Brian by calling 07749 903771.
