Sandygate’s unbeaten prospect “Smokin’” Joe Crawford was matched against England number three Lerone Harrison in front of the cameras on the Hatton TV show at the Park Hall Hotel, Chorley.
Harrison, a former kick-boxing champion and National ABA Minors finalist, also carried a unblemished record ahead of the contest.
The first round saw the 11-year-old Burnley boxer show the star-studded crowd why he is highly thought of by his Hargreaves Street coaches, constantly moving forward with precise phases of attack.
Joe scored well, working off his jab then moving to the inside, using a cracking rear hand upper-cut as Harrison was caught off guard.
The second saw Harrison up his game, controlling the round, and although Crawford lost his footing, he kept composure throughout, showing great fight maturity from the St Christopher’s Year 7 pupil, withstanding the pressure and countering.
The round ended with all ringside giving it a round a piece to these two very skilled pugilists.
The third and final round was a thriller, with Manchester’s Harrison returning to his hard-to-hit back foot style, which was just up Crawford’s alley, with the Ightenhill lad keeping his tight guard and catching his opponent with a peach of a uppercut while working off the ropes.
It was to a hushed crowd that the verdict was announced, and a split decision 29-28, went in favour of a jubilant Crawford.
Presenting the trophies, Ricky Hatton was full of praise for the young boxer: “Joe was great, he is definately one to watch in the future.”
The bout is available to watch on Hatton Boxing TV as well as Hatton youtube.
