Rugby League side end season on a high

Burnley and Pendle Rugby League team ended their summer season with a 36-10 win over Runcorn.

The much bigger Runcorn side started strongly, and with the Black and Reds on the back foot, the pressure finally told with Runcorn opening the scoring after 10 minutes.

From the kick-off, Burnley and Pendle’s fortune didn’t change, as, again, on the back of gifting Runcorn field position, the visitors found a gap in the defence to score once more. This time the conversion was missed.

An error from the restart gave possession to the hosts in the visitors’ red zone and solid drives by the pack set up Matt Crowley to sneak over to make it 10-6.

And the locals were ahead at the break when Sam Walker split the defence but was brought down just short of the line. A quick play the ball found Ben Healy running hard to crash over under the posts.

An excellent kick off from Shaye McCullough saw the ball bounce into touch. From the resulting scrum an attacking move orchestrated by Ryan Mirfield found Walker to stretch the lead. From the kick off, Danny Rowland returned the ball deep into the visitors’ half, with Walker again on hand to finish.

And a flowing back line move saw centre Sonny Bill Waddington beat the covering defence to put the game away 30-10.

Walker scored again top a fine individual display, with all the tries converted by McCullough.
