Burnley’s Sandygate Amateur Boxing Club’s North West Boys’ Clubs champion Reece Farnhill won his National Pre-Quarter-Finals bout against Merseyside champion J.Harrison (Transport ABC) at the Croxteth Leisure Centre, Liverpool.

With both young pugilists carrying recognised pedigree, it was set to be a great contest, and they didn’t let down the crowd, which stayed behind to watch the concluding bout of the tournament.

Boxing at Class C, 69kg, over three three-minute rounds, from the opening bell the exchanges were plentiful.

Farnhill, 17, went toe to toe from the off, matching the aggressive nature of Harrison.

Both boxers worked well on the inside, with the exciting Sandygate boxer catching well with his lead hand upper-cut, rear hand hook combination.

Farnhill moved up the gears in the last minute, throwing wave after wave of jabs, wearing down the extremely durable Liverpudlian.

The second round was a master class from the Hargreaves Street boxer, attacking in phases, pivoting at will and scoring with relative ease.

The score started to increase, keeping centre the whole time and working at full intensity for the complete round.

In the third and final round, sensing he was behind, Harrison’s pedigree shone as he gave it his all, but Farnhill weathered the storm and took control of the round.

At one point Harrison was holding on, unable to defend the barrage on the inside.

It was to no surprise when Sandygate’s Farnhill’s hand was raised the winner with a unanimous decision from the judges ringside.

He now looks forward in boxing the Yorkshire champion in the next round.

Also on the Championship bill, Brendan Collins (16) narrowly lost out on a split-verdict against S.Watson (Phoenix ABC).

With Sandygate’s older boxers being so active in the Championships, the club’s 10-year-olds also competed in their learning of the noble art in skills bouts.

Stoops Estate’s Dalton “Weekly” Stoiles (10) boxed E.Reece (Egan’s ABC) and Charly “Blue” Vassilev (10) faced C.Ashley (Egan’s ABC) at the Wythenshawe Forum, with both Sandygate newbies totally dominating.

Troy “Big-Foot” Richmond (10) travelled to North Wales to box C.Roberts (Maelor ABC, Wales) for his skills bout, and put in a awesome display, knocking his opponent down in the first one-minute round.

The club also look forward to its first home show of the season at The Mechanics Theatre, with tickets priced at just £10 for 17 contests.
