THE 2009 Moorhouse’s Golden Cue winner Peter Mercer has booked a place in this year’s final, where he will face reigning champion Farak Ajaib at Ighten Leigh Social Club on Sunday, May 13th (1 p.m.).
Mercer overcame Tony Greenwood of Worsthorne Club in the semi-finals on Tuesday night.
He raced into a 2-0 lead before Greenwood fought back to 2-2 to force a very exciting and nerve-jangling deciding frame,
Mercer came back from the brink of defeat and was first to have a go at the final black, but missed badly and left Greenwood with what looked like an easy chance.
But with a place in the final at stake there are no gimmies, and Greenwood not only missed the black, but, amazingly, the white ball fell into the pocket after what seemed like an age, and Mercer couldnt believe he was through to the final, leaving Greenwood inconsolable.
The previous night, Ajaib beat Mark Salmon 3-0 in their last four encounter.
Salmon should have won the first frame, but missed a straight black into a tight middle pocket, and Ajaib mopped up,
The highlight was a fantastic 121 clearance by Ajaib in frame three to take the match, which was watched by a very good crowd, who gave a Ajaib a standing ovation.
In the quarter-finals, Mercer, of Low Moor Club, beat Rolls-Royce’s D. Paton 3-1, Colne Legion’s Salmon beat C. Docherty of Canteen 3-0, in a repeat of last year’s final, Dave Howe of Ighten Leigh again lost out to Ajaib of Padiham, losing 3-1, and A. Bates of Lamb Club lost by the odd frame in five to Greenwood of Worsthorne.
