BURNLEY Gymnastics Club has held its first ever intra club competition.

The competition was organised as part of the centre’s “Be Inspired” scheme, which is helping train up athletes of tomorrow.

More than £500 was raised for new equipment and there was even more good news when two of the club’s gymnasts won places at the Lancashire School Games in Blackpool. Lydia Stanworth came away with gold, Rihanna Doogan taking silver.

The competition was a special occasion as recent Burnley Olympic Torch Bearer Lucy Cowgill showed the gymnasts her torch and club chairman Gill Cragg said: “The girls have been practising hard on their routines ready for the club competition. We are very grateful for Lucy bringing her torch down and it made the day extra special.”

The gymnasts have recently been inspired by Beth Tweddle, British Olympic gymnast and three-times world champion who came to open their new home and provide a coaching masterclass.
