Oathey impresses in defeat as he moves up in weight and class

Roche Boxing Club’s national schoolboy champion Oathey Jones gave a terrific account of himself as he made a step up in weight and class last Friday.

Boxing at the Forum Social Club in Stoke, the youngster took on Mansfield’s John Leivers - also a schoolboy champion, but up a weight from Jones.

He lost by a majority verdict after three close one-and-a-half minute rounds at 40-44 kg.

Coach Brian Roche said: “Oathey is an excellent boxer, and he fought another class act, but only lost by one point.

“It was a brilliant contest and Oathey can be pleased with how he boxed on the night.”

Also in action from the Briercliffe Road club was Zeyher Hussain, fighting at 58 kg.

He took on Swandlincote’s Steve Simpkin in another well-matched contest.

Hussain won every round to claim a points victory, and Roche beamed: “Zeyher is only 18, and it was first first bout, and he was excellent.

“He’s a nice boxer, who can punch a bit as well, and Simpkin could also box, so it was an impressive performance.”

Roche Boxing Club host their own show at Byerden House on Friday, May 24th.

Tickets are £10 from Brian Roche on 07749903771, and the action starts around 8 p.m., with 13 bouts for fight fans.
