Jeff Wilkinson drove into office as Towneley Golf Club captain for 2014 at the weekend.

Originally from Southport, Jeff has been a member at the club since the early 1990s, and the former army engineer is an avid fan of Burnley FC and Lowerhouse CC.

After his drive in, the annual challenge match was held between the Captain’s team and Secretary Dave Cheetham’s team, with “Cheetham’s Marauders” the victors in a closely-contested match.

The previous day, the Winter League Finals Day took place, with treasurer John Buchanan winning the Ken Pott Trophy with an incredible tally of 45 points, ahead of Glyn Carlin (42 points) and president Mick Bradshaw (41 points).

A subsidiary stableford was also held, with Worsthorne’s Ian Howarth toppimng the field with 43 points from club steward Ronnie Catlow, runner-up on the card from Jack Kelly, both with 39 points.

The Turner brothers battled it out for top spot on the final day of the Winter League competition, with Steve powering his way to victory from younger sibling Gary after the pair finished on the same number of points.

At Burnley Golf Club, the Yellow ball team event on Saturday was won by Gary Blades, Mark Ridgway, Hadrian Thorne and Andy Heaton with 75 points, from Craig Holden, Robert Dutoit, Richard Greaves and David Owen, who were runners-up on the card with 73 points from Paul and Mark Green, Ian Henderson and Graham Evans.

The ladies’ single stableford was won by Lynda Wills with 29 points, with Deborah Horrocks a point adrift on 28, and Lynda Makin third with 27.
