Sandygate ABC’s James “Kimbo” Kimberley (12) stormed into the Royal Navy ABA National Schoolboy Final after a one-sided affair at the Boxing School of Excellence in Gorton, Manchester on Sunday.
The popular Burnley club’s hottest prospect, Kimberley, 12 - 6ft tall and 60kg - was pitted against Yorkshire’s Nathan Clarkson (Mickeys ABC, Selby).
Straight from entering the squared circle, the St Augustine’s RC School pupil’s height difference was apparent, towering above his opponent, using his long reach.
Kimberley set his stall out from the opening bell, scoring well and moving well against a gallant champion from the Yorkshire/Merseyside and Cheshire areas.
With great ring craft and a dominant lead hand, the contest was never going to be close, and the Olympic-style computer scoring finished 19-6 in favour of last year’s Minors ABA Finalist Kimberley.
“James is the biggest 12-year-old I have ever come across, at just over 6ft even I have to look-up to him!. He uses his long reach to its fullest with most opponents not getting near to him” beamed Sandygate coach Nik Tucker.
The Hargreaves Street fighter now faces the champion of the Southern Regions, Chalvedon ABC’s C.Woodroffe this weekend at The Lindhurst Rooms, Civic Centre, Mansfield.
Stablemate Jerome Lawton (15) was not so lucky, narrowly missing out against England international C. Robinson (PTSB ABC) in what was the highest-scoring bout of the day, 38-22.
“ I couldn’t ask more from Jerome, the scoring in the second had my head scratching!
“But he will be back looking to make it 4 North West titles running next season.”
