THE Burnley CombatSombo Club had 13 members competing at the British Sombo Federation Championships in Dumfries, and returned with a bagful of medals.
The British Championships were an open event, so countries that are members of the World Governing Body FIAS could compete, and the event was very well supported with competitors from England, Scotland, Wales, Russia, USA, Switzerland and Bulgaria.
And the club enjoyed great success.
In the Junior Boys’ Sport Sombo, Ryan Marsden claimed gold, with Jack McLoughlin winning silver and Ewan Hartley and Hudson Dand bronze.
Seneca Lupton won gold in the Junior Girls’ Sport Sombo, with Francesca Wallace taking silver, and in the Ladies’ Light Weight Sport Sombo, Emma Reid won gold ahead of Diane Hawkins, who claimed the silver medal.
The Mens’ Light Weight Full Contact CombatSombo saw Gintaras Jonuskis win silver, and Ryan Lockwood a bronze, and Ryan Taylor took silver in the Men’s Middle Weight Full Contact CombatSombo.
The club are now in training for the first ever Commonwealth Sombo Championships to be held in September.
Burnley CombatSombo is a member of the British Governing Body for the sport, with classes at St Peter’s Centre, Burnley.
