TOWNELEY Golf Club’s captain for 2011 is George Westwell.
The sprightly 79-year-old drove into office on a rather wet Sunday morning.
The popular veteran has been a member at Towneley for around 20 years.
In his youth, George was opening batsman for Bacup Cricket Club in the Lancashire League, and also played football as a winger for many local Valley teams.
He is looking forward to his season at the Todmorden Road club, and says: “It will be an honour to be captain of the club, and this is the highlight of my long golfing career.”
To add to his golfing prowess, he is also due to marry his childhood sweetheart Jean later this year.
After the drive-in, a Captain’s v Scretary’s match took place, with secretary Pete Witts’ Marauders the victors by 6.5, with one match halved.
The previous day, Geoff Bolland had an excellent tally of 44 points to win the Finals Day of the Winter League competition.
Neil Jackson was runner-up, a point adrift.
Nearest the pin awards went to Benny Ingham at the sixth hole and Steve Turner at the 17th.
