England’s newest international Jay Rodriguez has sponsored Sandygate Amateur Boxing Club’s unbeaten prospect Joe Crawford.

The Ighten Leigh 11-year-old, nicknamed “Smokin’ Joe” got a pre-Christmas surprise when the former Clarets striker, currently starring in the Premier League with Southampton - along with his Burnley-based company Number 9 Properties - agreed to back the young pugilis.

Father Kiko Rodriguez, on behalf of Number 9 Properties, handed the St Christopher’s CE High School pupil a full training kit, including gloves, headgear and designer shorts from Amir Khan’s dresser Suzy Wong.

Kiko said: “We were over the moon to help out “Smokin’ Joe”,

“Sandygate ABC are a great club who do so much for the youth in Burnley, as well as producing International boxers.

“Although primarily a football town, Sandygate ABC give another sporting option to the community and myself , Carol and Jay all wished to support local talent from the club, and having seen Joe sparring, we cant wait to watch his next fight”.
