The new year brought a new challenge for the Bobcats at Ponds Forge in the City of Derby Open.

The meet was massively oversubscribed and the country’s top swimmers were in attendance, but the Bobcats finished a remarkable 17th out of 61 clubs, with all swimmers putting in great performances.

Elliott Norman, age 10 came away with most podium places, taking gold in the 100m and 200m Breastroke, and the 100m and 200m Freestyle.

In addition he took silver in the 100m Backstroke and finished fourth in the 200m Individual Medley final.

Ella Sheridan, age 12, took silver in the 200m and 400m Freestyle events and Will Murray took bronze in the 100m Freestyle final and finished seventh in the 100m Butterfly final.

A number of the swimmers recorded times which put them within a second of securing their National Qualification Times, while Jamie Sharpley, Erica Minozzi, Grace Pickles, Emma Fothergill, Katie Rennolds, Kerry Holding and Luke Pickles recorded personal bests.

Head Coach Michael Robinson said: “It was a fantastic weekend overall, with Bobcats swimmers holding their own against the best swimmers in the country.

“Sharing the pool with world champions and world record holders will help provide confidence for the swimmers when they go back to Sheffield to compete at the national championships.”
