Dawn wins first major of the season at Burnley Golf Club

The first major of the season at Burnley Golf Club, the Thornber Shield, was won by Dawn Elliott by a stroke.

Dawn shot 87-15-72 to win from lady captain Lynda Wills (91-18-73).

Lisa Wilson was third with 85-11-74, the best gross score of the day.

The men also had their first major, the Burnley Cup, and a closely-fought contest was finally won by Matt Maguire (67-3-64), with Oliver Gill (82-16-66) second after cards with Michael Chambers (79-13-66).

Ben Scott had the best gross, playing off scratch and shooting 66 to bring his handicap down to +0.4.

In the Mixed Junior/Adult competition, Macaulay Walton and Michael Chambers were winners ahead of Ross Henderson and father Ian, who runs the professional shop at Glen View.

Ross, at seven-years-old, was playing in his first ever competition!

At Towneley Golf Club, Daniel Haslam was in tremendous form to win the Scratch Matchplay Trophy.

The 16-year-old beat club champion Ben Collinson in the quarter-final, then defeated Dave Drinkwater in the last four, before beating Darren Whitaker by 3 and 2.

Whitaker saw off Gary Chadwick and Gary Turner on the way to the final.

Ernie Whittaker won the President’s Cup with 41 points, with Scott Weldon runner-up on the card from Karl Robinson after both players carded 39 points.

Gary Turner won the Thwaites Trophy with an impressive tally of 42 points.

Gary Collinson was runner-up on 40 points, and Nick Rae third with 39.

Geoff Hurst won the Tuesday Stableford on the card from Paul Bell, both with 39 points.

Head greenkeeper Damien Hartley won the Thursday competition with 42 points.
