Burnley College Sixth Form Centre’s Sports Academies have got the New Year off to a winning start.

The Netball Academy beat Myerscough College 31–12 in an away fixture with goals from Society, Health and Development student Olivia Gill, Sports Studies student Rebecca Ellwood, Sports Science student Lauren Slattery and Business Management student Hannah Gallagher.

Assistant Coach Tanita Heney said: “We were delighted with our first result of the year.

“The girls stayed focused throughout the whole of the game and communicated well with each other.”

The Male Football Academy’s first team beat Lancaster and Morecambe College 5–0 away thanks to two goals from Football Studies student Ross Murphy and goals from Football Studies students Kieran Lee and Matty Fearon.

Coach Gerry Harrison said: “After not playing any games for two months due to postponements, we came out and produced a first half performance of real quality and control scoring all five goals in the first half hour.

“From a coach’s point of view it was very pleasing to see the team producing this kind of display.

“Kieran Lee’s goal would grace any Premier League game.

“He received the ball on the left, beat two or three players and from nowhere unleashed an unstoppable right footed shot into the top right hand corner of the net.”

In a double header of English Basketball Division 4 fixtures, the Basketball Academy, Burnley Blaze beat the Cheshire Jets 84-38 and the Bury Blue Devils 71-44.

Coach Malcolm Leak said: “I am delighted that the team continue to improve their performances with each game that they play.

“We are performing well in all of the competitions we are involved in and look like having a very successful season.”
