BURNLEY Tennis Club got their season off to a fantastic start when the Open C team travelled to face Clitheroe A in the first round of the Division Two and Three knockout.

The team, consisting of Ken Greenwood and Steven Blackadder and Steven Holt and Darren Bradshaw, put in a magnificent performance to pull off a shock victory, going through on countback after the match ended 2-2.

In the second round, Burnley C were rewarded with a home game against more tough opposition in Accrington A.

The team again did the club proud with another fantastic performance. The match ended 2-2 but again countback gave Burnley victory.

Burnley C are now into the quarter-finals, with a home game against Crosshills B.

Burnley F and D open teams were also involved in the knockout, with Burnley F losing a very tough away match to Whalley B.

Burnley F sent a team of four ladies to play Whalley B’s four men, and they made the men work very hard for their 3-1 win.

Burnley D played an all- Burnley match against Burnley E, with the D team winning 4-0 to earn a quarter-final with Whalley B.

Last week was the first league matches of the season in the Open, Junior and Mixed Leagues as well as the National League.

Burnley recorded some excellent results, starting with the Under 16s team, who defeated Darwen 4-2 away.

In the National Under 18s boys’ league, Burnley were awarded a 12-0 win against Manchester Tennis Centre, who failed to raise a team.

In the Men’s National League, Burnley were at home against Lostock going down 8-4.

In the Open League, Burnley A travelled to Crosshill A and came away with a comfortable 4-1 win.

Burnley B hosted defending champions Blackburn Northern A, and avoided what, on paper, should have been a 5-0 defeat thanks to a fine display from Steve Palmer and Chris Rowell in their second match.

Burnley C travelled to Whalley B and recorded a solid 3-2 win, with Burnley D destroying Parkwood C 5-0.

Burnley E lost a close match 3-1 against Darwen B, and Burnley F recorded a 5-0 win against Crosshills C.

Sunday saw the opening games for Burnley B, C and D in the Mixed League.

Burnley B got their campaign off to a cracking start with a 7-2 win against Parkwood A.

Burnley C were up against Darwen A, earning a fantastic 8-1 win, and Burnley D secured victory in the second division with an 9-0 success against Crosshills A.
