Burnley Rugby Club opened their 2014/15 campaign with a home loss to visitors Ormskirk, going down 26-20.
Luca Angelone powered over for the locals’ first score after good work by the forwards.
Burnley’s impressive start continued as a couple of quick penalties scored by new captain Paul Mallaband gave them a useful 10-0 lead.
The visitors responded strongly from a catch and drive from a lineout, and their excellent kicker converted well.
Tempers frayed in the this tight match and both players lost a man to the sin bin.
The visitors seemed to cope the better and added to their total, taking a 14-10 half-time lead.
With both sides back to their full complement, there was some excellent rugby by both sides.
Burnley’s three debutants Richard Birchall, Jack Donovan and Joe Haley all had promising starts, Haley having a number of runs - one of which netted a score.
Sadly Burnley lost another player to the bin and the visitors took full advantage to create two more scores to lead 26-15 going into the final 10 minutes.
Matt Higson made a good break before releasing winger Sam Mounsey, who showed strength and speed to score in the corner.
The home side were in the ascendancy but the visitors held out to progress despite the locals big shout for a score as Billy Ingham powered over, but was adjudged to have been held up.
Burnley will be reasonably happy with scoring four tries, but more importantly the promise showed by the debut of so many youngsters.
Tomorrow the first and thirds travel to Wharfedale and Bolton, and the seconds are home to Tarleton (3 p.m. kick-offs).
On Sunday there will be a meeting for all juniors’ parents followed by training and registration at 10 a.m..
